NOVENA TO END DISEASE

WHAT IS A NOVENA?

Novenas are a type of prayer that traditionally lasts for nine days. Many novenas are prayed for a specific intention through the intercession of a particular saint, while others are prayed directly to Jesus. The word "novena" comes from the Latin word novem, meaning "nine." There is Scriptural reason why the number nine is significant. After Jesus' ascension into heaven forty days after Easter, the apostles prayed for the next nine days. These nine days led up to the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. This pattern of nine days of prayer is basis for the novenas we pray today. Many novenas are prayed during the nine days leading up to a feast or before an important event, but they can be prayed at any time. They are a great way to become more persistent in your prayers and to "pray without ceasing."

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and overburdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden light." -Mt 11:28-30
